Negative Spaces
Negative space is the area in art around your subject, or between subjects. In string art the usual way to do it is to print out a template and fill in the inside. Although we can use the negative space technique and instead of going inside the pattern you fill in the space around it, leaving a silhouette of your pattern. If you pattern is only distinguishable from the details on the inside this may not be the best technique to use on it. Do bear in mind that when you do a negative space artwork you have to hammer in nails/pins all around the outside of your wood (yes right on the edge around the outside) in order to be able to put string from the outside to your pattern. Although there is a lot more hammering involved this negative space technique can be really, really effective. Take the example on the right.
